Gambling Against the G.O.A.T.

How One Friendly Bet Turned Into a War of Attrition With Michael Jordan

Welcome back to another weekly edition of “What odd thing happened in sports” featuring me and professional athletes. All jokes aside, this week offers an odd story with the actual greatest of all time, Michael Jordan. One of the greatest athletes, greatest competitors, greatest men to ever grace this earth, what more can be brought up about this man? Well this week a new story was brought up with him involving an odd combination of golf, alcohol, and gambling.

Former hockey grate Jeremy Roenick unveiled this tale on a Boston radio station where he and Jordan had an infamous morning of golfing. Roenick apparently beat Jordan in a game where they each bet a few thousand dollars that the other would win. Thinking he was done for the day, Roenick began walking away with his winnings. Jordan, who had a basketball game against Cleveland in five hours at the time, tells him double or nothing. Taken back by this, Roenick agrees and proceeds to beat the G.O.A.T. again doubling his winnings off him. Now at this point, Jordan is not only down almost five thousand dollars, but he is also extremely intoxicated from drinking through two whole games of golf. Did this stop him from making another bet? You better believe it didn’t! He wagered Roenick for a third time, however, this time on his performance in his game that would have been three hours away. Jordan bet him Roenick’s winnings that he would score more than 40 points and the Bulls would win by more than 20. In spectacular fashion, Jordan exceeded those numbers by scoring 44 points and winning by 24.

Now this new story brings up a few questions that the average reader might ask. One being if Michael Jordan is human or not. To that I can only answer that as far as I know he is although he does have unnatural talents that go farther than what a mere normal man can accomplish, he is human. Another question would be how did he perform so well while being intoxicated? Again, I’d have to direct that question back to the first. And finally, did Jordan have a gambling issue? This is interesting, actually as many stories have come out about Jordan and gambling. Some might say it is just his shear instinct for competition to why he kept on betting with Roenick. Others might find this as more evidence to a gambling addiction as there are more than enough stories that show Jordan involved with gambling; there is even a conspiracy theory that Jordan quit basketball to save his dad from loan sharks that he bet from. Regardless of what you believe in, I’m going to leave the answer up to the loyal reader. Its up to you in what you believe. One thing is certain, however, and that Jordan truly was a man that put his money on the table when he needed to preform both on and off the court.

Bad Luck in the Big Apple

A Rouge Cat Steals the Show on Monday Night Football

The New York Giants are back again with another headline, and no they did not release Eli Manning yet. This new headline is from the most unlikely of sources, a cat. Yesterday’s Monday Night Football matchup had the Giants hosting the Dallas Cowboys in a divisional game. Daniel Jones versus Dak Prescott, Saquon Barkley versus Ezekiel Elliott, the people of New York versus the people of Dallas, how much excitement could there possibly be. Well to everyone’s dissatisfaction, this was an awful game as the Cowboys bulldozed their way to a 37 to 18 victory. You would think a dazzling performance would be the headliner of this game. Well, you are wrong for the second week in a row if you’ve read my previous post. This game was dictated by a random cat that found its way onto the field.

Close to the end of the second quarter, this adventurous feline found itself strutting its paws on the Giants’ goal line. It then proceeded to stop the game for the next two minutes as it ran aimlessly around the field.  Security and grounds crew tried to get ahold of the cat, however, it seemed just as elusive as Saquon Barkley. Actually, let me take that back because the cat WAS more elusive than him in this contest. After the cat was on the field, the Cowboys held the Giants to only nine points for the rest of the game. This included holding Barkley to only 28 total yards which, ironically, is less than what the cat ran which was a total of 50 yards. It is common belief that black cats cause bad luck and this little fella decided to spread that to the Giants. In fact, there is going to be a lot more of that considering a whole litter of stray cats were found after the game concluded.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones even commented on the luck as he said, “But things did kind of change when the black cat came. What was amazing to me was how few people wanted to grab him”. Defensive end Demarcus Lawrence also had his fun taking side with the cat as he stated after the game, “Man, the game was over. If a black cat runs on the damn field on a Monday Night Football game, a black cat, you might want to call it quits, bro”. This cat has even found its way onto social media with countless fans rallying behind it. It has become so much of an icon that The Checkdown, a football social media page, went out of their way to make a short documentary spoof on the cat. The cat was a little late for Halloween, but it sure did provide the much-needed entertainment on this Monday Night game.

How Two Girls Stunned the Nation With One Lift of a Shirt

What a way to start out a blog site. On baseball’s biggest stage with millions viewing, everyone was centered on Houston Astro’s pitcher Gerrit Cole as he dealt against the Washington National’s in game five of the World Series on Monday night. You would think all the attention would be on Gerrit Cole and his dominance that has straight up blanked the Nationals offence. Well, my friend, you would be wrong because two models were able to stun an entire crowd by flashing Gerrit Cole while he was pitching. Yes, this is no trick or joke, they got up and flashed their breasts at him mid-game. There have been pictures and videos all over the web about the two and their stunt to “rattle” the Houston pitcher. While their efforts were in vain as Cole went to throw a solid seven innings, three hit, one run performance, the two models ended up receiving national attention and not just the attention the men gave surrounding them.

This created a great deal of attention not only in sporting news, but even on a national stage. On the sporting aspect of their debacle, it was reported that the two models, Lauren Summer and Julia Rose, both received lifelong bans from MLB games for this act of public indecency. While MLB commissioner Rob Manfred cracking down on the individuals, other sporting media platforms have already claimed the two as celebrities. Barstool Sports in particular have been fond of the two calling them “the heroes we deserve”. They have even praised them on their baseball podcast Starting 9 where the host showers the two with compliments and offers to get them back into baseball games despite the ban.

Lauren Summer’s Tweet Regarding Her Actions

As hilarious as some of the backlash sounds, there is a very impactful message that came from this event. Lauren Summer has claimed her act to be a message for breast cancer awareness. She mentioned in an interview how they did know that their act would lead to a ban, however the publicity and rapid attention to all her social media/ related sites has brought about revenue that she plans on donating to breast cancer research. This act of generosity encapsulates everything the two models did on that fateful game five. They defied all odds and brought themselves into the public eye by doing the unthinkable. Not only did they bring joy to the men surrounding them, the two also donated to a great cause that is worth every bit of the lifelong ban.
